The Northern Sancy Massif

The Sanadoire and Tuillière rocks
Introduction:

Our Northern Sancy Massif package explores the area north of the Puy de Sancy. Your hiking area is located in the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, the largest nature reserve in France. Many remnants of volcanic activity can be seen, but also numerous waterfalls, springs and natural lakes such as Lac de Guéry, Lac d'Aydat and Lac Chambon.

The area north of the Puy de Sancy is surprisingly varied. Open tops with vistas alternate with forests and meadows. You will mainly walk on cart tracks and narrow paths.

On your walks you will also come across a number of pretty villages and towns, many of which have their origins in the middle Ages. The church of Saint-Nectaire is for example a jewel of Romanesque architecture. But there are also remains visible from even earlier times, such as prehistoric dolmens and Gallo-Roman baths.

You can start this holiday from one of the following places: Le Mont-Dore, Olloix, Saint-Nectaire or Voissières.

Pierrelongue
Description:

The walking holiday through the northern part of the Sancy massif is very varied. Like with all of our packages, each day you can choose out of various distances. From Le Mont-Dore you can for example walk to your next accommodation via the Lac de Guéry and the Lac de Servières.

Close to Lac de Guéry we strongly recommend a short stop at the viewpoint for the Tuillière and Sanadoire rocks. Walking close by these rocks is also feasible. This detour will in addition take you to Orcival – with its famous basilica – which is worthwhile visiting.

During this walking holiday you will most of the time see the Chaîne des Puys. You can even admire a few Puys (Puy de Charmont, Puy de Lassolas and Puy de la Vache) from nearby.

Near Olloix and Saint-Nectaire the Gorges de la Monne, Pierrelongue - a prehistoric menhir - and the Dolmen of Cournols and those of Saint-Nectaire ensure a variation in the in general out of forest and agricultural land existing landscape. Those who love longer daily distances can even visit the Grottes de Jonas. The more than 70 rooms of these caves, carved into the lava already in the 8th century by monks, are spread out over five levels and are connected via corridors and staircases. There is even a 12th century chapel with frescoes.

The Vallée de Chaudefour and the Puy de Sancy – with its 1.886m the highest point of the Massif Central - provide plenty of hiking possibilities. There are so many opportunities in this area that you have a choice out of eight variants when walking towards Le Mont-Dore. The more knee-friendly variants combine walking and using the cable car from the Puy de Sancy or the funiculaire (cog railway) to descend into Le Mont-Dore.

Relais des Voissières
Possible accommodation places:

Possible accommodations can be found in Le Mont-Dore, close to Lac d'Aydat, Olloix, Saint-Nectaire, Voissières, Besse and Fontaneix.

The accommodations all have a very different nature; an apartment in a more than 100-year old hotel in a lively mountain village, via a fairly secluded gîte in a hamlet in a beautiful valley up to an inn at a working farm, high up in the mountains. But all accommodations have in common that you as a hiker will receive a more than warm welcome.
